Services
Throughout the year, I visit classrooms to deliver lessons focused on communication skills, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills. These lessons and activities are designed to help children become aware of their emotions and learn to recognize how other people may feel.
In addition to classroom lessons I:
- facilitate small groups
- meet with students individually
- consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel
A note about confidentiality ...
Counseling will not be successful for the child unless there is an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance and a sense of trust between the school counselor and the child. This is true for individual as well as for group work with children.
This does not, however, mean that the counselor harbors secrets from others in the school setting. I share with the children that there are times when I must talk with other adults in their lives. Should there be any concern for their safety and/or the safety of others, I will need to inform them of the necessity to share my concerns with other responsible adults.
Safety is a key word in my work with children. I stress to them that the counselor's office is not a place, necessarily, for secrets, but a place of safety. In imparting this to the children, I am responsible for the sensitivity needed when others question me about the child and his/her reasons for working with me alone or in a group.
It is my responsibility to share with classroom teachers the information that will assist the teacher in teaching the child more effectively. I constantly need to make judgements regarding the extent and kind of information that I pass on to their teachers. My guideline is to decide if the information will or will not help the teacher to better meet the needs of the child in the classroom.
I know a warm, responsive classroom climate is the biggest asset to my program in meeting the emotional needs of the children in our school. I feel fortunate to be working in a school filled with such classrooms.
Please contact me if you have any concerns or requests for assistance regarding your child.
I look forward to working with you and your child during the school year!
