Counselor's Letter to 5th Grade Parents

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Moving-Up is over and your child will begin middle school in a few months. I want to take this opportunity to express congratulations and share some thoughts about your soon- to- be middle school student.

No doubt, because of Covid19, you have had the opportunity to spend more time with your fifth grader. You may have noticed them roll their eyes at you and watch you, newly awakened to your imperfections.  In no period of time, other than their first three years, is their brain developing at such an accelerating pace.  They are beginning to think critically, reason and reflect.  Believe it or not, they even are developing a new capacity for empathy and a strong sense of social justice.  One of the problems with all this developing brainpower is that it is not accompanied with adult perspective and experience.  Something as common as rejection by a friend may be perceived as a threat to their survival!

To help you navigate the next three years, maintain a sense of humor, share your middle school experiences with them, and show compassion. A little eye rolling on your part is permissible too!

Have a safe summer and be well.

AND THEN THEY STOPPED TALKING TO ME  by Judith Warner is an excellent new book about the middle school years.  Many of my thoughts expressed above are a result of having read this book.
